ACTUAL STUDENT TESTIMONIES ABOUT INSTRUCTOR ALP ALTINER

+ CASE STUDY
Alp Altiner is a great teacher not only because of his knowledge that he shares in the class, but also because of his ability to see individuals' needs. Alp finds out and remembers weaknesses and strengths of every students within first class or two , even though there were a lot of students. He completely customize the lesson for each person. The class was lead with very high standard and professionalism to keep us up with what the industry requires, yet it was so personally guided I could focus on what I need to improve rather than overwhelmed by it.
Another great thing about having Alp as a teacher is that he is the type of person who's willing to teach and inform people just to see them growing and doing better at what they do. And it's free of charge. You stay 10 weeks next Alp, you would get pouring shower of golden nuggets of information, not just the matte painting lessons. Great thing about his class is that we get to see him painting all the time. During the class, either he would be talking to you personally or he would be painting in front of the whole class. There's no hiding of techniques and information.
He will show you and teach you everything that he knows. He sincerely wants you to get something out of the class. I want to take his class again just to see him painting!!! During 10 weeks of class, we got to learn rules of composition, color correction, selecting right photo references, organizing files, etc.. Not only that he also talked about finding jobs, how to work in the industry, how to become successful professionals and other things that he is passionate to share as a teacher with great heart.
After taking his class, I could see that what I was doing wrong and realized that what I thought that I knew, I didn't really know. I am definitely a better artist than myself before the 10 weeks with Alp. You only need to bring enthusiasm and cheerful heart to the class. Everything else is in good hands . Oh, also bring energy drink. Cause you don't want to miss any second of it!

One of the first things you'll notice about Alp when he's teaching is his energy level, intensity and his passion for art. It is obvious that he enjoys teaching, and sharing the knowledge he has gained
over years of professional experience in the visual effects industry. Alp wasted no time in our matte painting class; quickly showing us Photoshop techniques that would allow us to become a faster and more fluid matte painter. Speed and accuracy were stressed; as Alp explained they were essential to success in the industry.
We next went over composition - focal points, how to draw the viewer's eye to areas of interest and guide them through the painting. Alp discussed several strategies to composition - and how to 'always be thinking' when you're painting. We also learned concept art techniques - how to quickly paint a concept for a matte painting - keeping in mind the composition, colors, values, all the while not forgetting to 'tell a story'.
Alp stressed the importance of using other forms of art to inspire you - paintings, photos, movies, comics - all can teach us lessons we can apply to our own work. We spent time discussing the industry' - what to expect when you're starting out, how to prepare a reel, what you should have on your website, how to interview,
and the kind of attitude and work ethic you must have to be successful.
The most amazing thing is Alp almost exclusively teaches by showing. He grabs a Wacom pen, and paints and teaches at the same time - always explaining why he is doing what he's doing, what his thought process is, all the while showing the class how exceptionally fast he is.
It may seem like a lot, but trust me - Alp has the energy level of 10 men - he truly enjoys what he does and is more than willing to share his knowledge with you. So bring an espresso drink, don't blink, and be prepared to be inspired."

Alp Altiner was very good at keeping the class at a professional level at all times, speaking from someone who has run through the gamut of the industry. And since he has done that in such a short amount of time, he was able to show us the faster techniques of getting ahead and what our future employers would want to see from artists.
Because he brings that speed to the class, the pace of learning and comprehending became much faster as well, forcing the students to stay up to par, much like the industry world.
This also brought a great positive energy to the room, mixed with your love of painting and drawing, as well as your passion to share it with others.
In 10 weeks we learned about compositional rules, having focal points, color picking to match reality, technical use of brushes, size of paintings, concepting ideas through quickly sketching, how to research photos and what to look for in chosing them, expanding ideas and developing/telling a story for the painting (whats happening, or what just happened, where do they live, time of day, overall mood.
I think to watch him paint in front of the class was beneficial for us to see your process, how he works out ideas, color, going over other colors, changing composition as you go along. And all done at a rapid speed. Would've been really friggin boring if you were slow :)
Overall, I think his energy about the art of matte painting and everything else that goes along with it, whether it be 3D or compositing, using Vue 6 or other programs to enhance the painting, created an extremely inspiring atmosphere for artists who most likely feel the same way about this art form. It only enhanced our aspirations of being a matte painter even more to have it shared by someone who has done it so succesfully.
